I had a wonderful time earlier today giving a presentation about forensic psychiatry to the Atlanta chapter of Sisters in Crime. What a terrific group of women (and one man)! They asked very thoughtful and insightful questions. We had thought-provoking discussions, including one about the sometimes sketchy history of mental health commitment and treatment, weighed against the current mental health laws, which, in favoring patient rights, have contributed to the homelessness and incarceration of scores of mentally ill. I wish we had satisfactory solutions to these problems.
I’ve now joined the national SinC organization, as well as the Atlanta chapter. I look forward to participation in future meetings and events, including the Decatur Book Festival on September 2-4.
